Can anyone help? Seen on 5th Jan near Kirkmichael, Perthshire on a forestry track. A medium large dark bird flew overhead from one conifer clump to an other, followed quickly by 5 or 6 more. All were making a sharp, monosylable scolding type alarm type call, 'chuck, chuck, chuck' My companion suggested woodcock, but the flight was steady and straight and I didn't get the impression of a long beak.I know pheasant, partridge, grouse by sight but this was about the size and shape of a black grouse but was not the right colour and I have heard a recording of them and it was not similar.
