Flowering on New Year's Day. Shrub with holly-like leaves and yellow flowers in dense spikes introduced and naturalised in borders.

Mahonia x media.

Mahonia x media flowers are a particular favourite of winter active Bombus terrestris

Cultivar: 'Charity'

This also bears out a local gardener's comment that he had one in his garden and it was called 'Charity'. So I will agree with Mahonia x media. Regards
