Thanks for that. Do these actually have much perfume? I remember kneeling down to have a good sniff but couldn't detect anything.
When you mention appressed hairs, is that on the petioles? They look to be at right angles to me.
I find it hard to be sure what the hairs are doing! They looked appressed to me, but not in clear focus, so if you think they are spreading, it would be Viola hirta. They are on all stalks. Viola odorata does not seem to be odorous to me. Perhaps it is one of those genetic things. V. hirta would not smell, of course.
I know exactly where that patch is, I'll try to get a better look in a couple of months.
