... are very inconsistent in showing this bark formation - sometimes you have to look at several branches/trees before you find it.
Generally speaking, Elms are more grey in colour, and the wings of the cork are broken.
Field Maple tend to have long runs of unbroken corky wings, and they are generally of a more reddish colour.

Checking my winter twigs - it looks as if this is an elm with alternate buds - whereas field maple has opposite buds
I have both in my hedge and will check in the next few days
