I have seen this "blob" fungus on several trees in this wood. This one is on a dead Silver Birch but I have seen it on Beech and (I think) Sycamore. It is fairly firm to touch with pores all over the surface. At first glance it looks like someone has splatted a ball of paper mache onto the bark

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

If it was firm but you could

If it was firm but you could have made a hole with your finger it is Reticularia lycoperdon. If it is too solid for that Piptoporus is possible.
