There's now been 18 ID's of this species on Ispot, all on the West coast (of GB+ 1 SW Ireland), except yours & 1 in Banff. But there's another Lepas anatifera at http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/238597 which 10 people failed to id as such, including 3 experts. However NB that 2 of the experts also mis-Id'd a common whelk as a dog whelk at http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/120786 (now overturned & only 2 experts for dogw.,1 inactive for some time)
I hadnt seen them before but 2 friends who are not ispotters have done, 2 fishermen. One has seen them where I did and another who lives right on the shore has seen them several times washed up in a completely unrecorded spot on the Co Antrim coast at Garron Point.
In a previous conversation about these on iSpot I said I was unlikely to see them unless I went to the west of Ireland as they were known to pop up there. I was pleased with this observation, a curious organism.
