Herring

This takes me back to my Pike fishing days, a top top bait fish.

I hope to have a crack at a pike before winter is out Chris. I should bring a few of these with me, though I would need to get some more, the cat was given the last one today. They probablty give out a lot of scent being an oily fish, attractive to pike. Better than mackerel in your opinion?

Muddy waters

We used to fish some very muddy gravel pits. We used to inject them with pilchard oil. When they hit the water the oil slick used to calm even the choppiest of waters.

Mackerel

Mackerel tails were great as they would stay on the hook all day. The best whole bait though was Scad a sort of Mackerel herring cross but they were a devil to get hold of.

On the heavily fished waters around Reading a frozen Mackerel tail would cast in excess of 90 metres, reaching relatively un-fished waters, there was no chance of getting that distance with a Herring, Sardine or similar.

Yeah they are very soft

Yeah they are very soft Chris, especially after being frozen. I have been advised to freeze them in blocks of water to keep them a bit firmer.

The scad aka 'horse mackerel' is a fish which I have only seen in any abundance in my local waters in one particular summer- 1994. I havent seen it since. I did see pics this year on an angling forum of scad caught off the Co. Cork coast. They would possibly be more common in the southern waters of the English Channel and off southern Ireland than here.

Its strange how a sea fish can be very abundant locally in one year and then not again for a long time.

Hooks

Another tip was to freeze them with the hooks already set in them. Provided you could keep them frozen it helped a lot.
