Adder (Vipera berus)

Grabbed a quick iPhone shot of this adder in my local wood sunning itself before making off into the undergrowth. I'm interested in the fact that this was taken in later October. Wouldn't it have gone into hibernation by then or is this normal? A great site though. A female I think.

It's not unusual to see

It's not unusual to see adders basking at any time of year near their hibernacula if it is sunny and warm. I would say this is probably a male as the zig-zag is black. They can look very much like females at this time of year until they shed their skin in spring. If you have a picture that shows the tale it might be possible to give a more definite answer.

Thanks Masked Marvel. Sorry I don't have any other pictures, this was a very quick iphone shot, no chance of any others.
