Wasp-like insect, Wake Forest, North Carolina

Observed: 26th November 2012 By: emmasarahtennant
not a bee
Description:

I spotted these wasp-like insects frolicking in flowers, bushes and trees in woodlands, Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA. They were shy initially although became aggressive if intruded on. Seen in larger groups flying in and out of grassy mounds. My American friend called them bees (in particular, honeybees) and suggested US honeybees are different to UK honeybees. I think a case of mistaken identity – but they don't look like European wasps?

It is one of the 'yellow-jacket' wasps. I don't know what species you have in NC.
