This bird flew past me as I was trying to photograph something else and I managed to capture it in near perfect lighting.

A young bird

Not yet an adult bird - has neither the grey-blue head of an adult male nor the brown, black-barred tail of the adult female. Great photo to illustrate a teenage kestrel.

Kestrel plumage

Older females can have grey tails but they are always barred. This one doesn't seem to have any barring.
