I really don't think this is Solidago, David. Looks like what I have seen of Senecio ovatus, though there might be other similar species?

I'm not very sure either Ian,felt I should know it but now not confident. I don't really know Senecio ovatus either!

Not Solidago I am sure. Rather like Sinacalia tangutica but the leaves are wrong and too broad for Senecio ovatus. One of what used to be Senecio but split into several genera now.

Looking at photos of S. ovatus, it can have broad lower leaves...
Though I can't guarantee the pictures are correctly identified!
It's certainly closer to that species than to Sinacalia tangutica. It's also very similar to Senecio hercynicus, shown in Flora helvetica, and that seems to have broader leaves...
That could be the answer...?
I've looked up Tela Botanica, and both Senecio ovatus and Senecio hercynicus are found in the Vosges.
