Brown Hairy Fly

Observed: 23rd August 2012 By: BalletBugBalletBug’s reputation in Invertebrates
Brown Hairy Fly

Like a little monster with big red well separated eyes, big thorax with lots of spikey hairs on, visible open mouth, hairy legs. I saw a few of them along the coastal path, always sitting on cow parsley plants.

One of our commonest flies, which is variable in size and colour. Next summer, have a look at a fresh cow will almost certainly be covered in these. The large, furry, orange males are very distinctive, but the smaller, greyer females are less easy to pick out among other similar flies of various genera.
