All Lycoperdon are

All Lycoperdon are saprotrophic so growing from wood. I have certainly seen L.perlatum growing from stump but was VERY rotten.
I mentioned On previous puffball post about finding species that are growing from wood when it does not fit there accepted habitat. Brown roll rim growing from Pine stump and False Morel growing above a Ganoderma on very decayed old beech trunk.
