Oak before ash?

The rhyme in Worcestershire for predicting the summer was:
Oak before ash
Only a splash
Ash before oak
Expect a soak
In fact oak seems prone to leaf dependent on temperature, I was told, whereas ash is less sensitive to changes. Not sure if it's true, but a friend who collected records said that it was quite reliable as a weather predictor.
