Female

The slightly speckled breast would indicate a female.

Black Redstart

Black Redstart would be a far smaller bird, about the same size as a Robin. Compared to this female Blackbird, it would also be more upright in its stance and more grey coloured. One of those where if you now saw a Black Redstart, you would realise how different they are!

Slightly embarrassed about

Slightly embarrassed about this - I always though blackbirds had yellow beaks - didn't realise the female could have a red breast. Hey, I'm just starting out on this...

Blackbirds

Don't worry...we all made horrible mistakes when starting out!

The yellow beak of Blackbirds comes with age and is only a deep colour in males. Females tend to get a more coloured breast as they get older, and misidentifications with Thrushes is the normal thing, as they can look quite spotty.
