This looks like one of the Ganoderma bracket fungi - can you recall what tree it was on?
It was on a stump of a flowering cherry tree (it had to be felled because it was pushing up the neighbour's fence).
I should think Ganoderma is as good a bet as anything. They can be found on most deciduous trees (some Ganoderma species are particularly common on beech).
