Description:

Black fibrous scales on chestnut brown, fibrous cap which has inrolled margin and remains of cortina. Gills are mid-brown and feintly sinuate. Spore print white/pale cream. Stem quite fibrous and slightly paler than cap. Found in cluster - older ones were flatter - at base of tree which, I think, might have been hazel (hard to tell as all leaves gone). I wondered if it might be the dreaded Armillaria mellea, Honey Fungus?
