Balkan Whip Snake

Observed basking on warm concrete driveway. I was able to get very close to it without disturbing it - I almost thought it was dead. Unfortunately the cat came up, obviously completely unaware of the snake's presence, it was so still, and practically trod on it. The snake immediately flowed away with that beautiful undulating motion and took refuge in a hole under a stone. So I didn't have time for a real close look.
Edit: I gather that the scientific name has been changed to Hierophis genomensis.

Correct Id

The name has changed for this species, it is now called Hierophis gemonensis. You should add a revised ID with the new name to keep iSpot up to date. It may also link this observation to others of this species.

New name

I originally thought I should stick to iSpot's recognised name, but have followed your advice.
