My only doubt is that it was no bigger than a Sparrow, the close up picture make it look bigger than what it was, chances are you are correct although by now I would have though this years fledgling would be about full size in which case I would have recognised it
This year's fledglings are the same size as their parents from a very early stage. They do not gradually increase in size through their first year, as some other animals do...they are fully grown just a few weeks after leaving the nest. This bird will have appeared small to you, but in reality won't have been, as variation in size is very limited in birds like this. A big House Sparrow has a wing length of about 80mm, a small Blackbird of about 120mm...quite a difference.
Lone birds can be very hard to judge size on, sometimes, and perhaps the strong light here had something to do with that.
