Slug

It does seem to look like one of the splits, Arion (Kobeltia) owenii. Its turning out to be the more common in my garden to that of A.hortensis and A distinctus...showing to be the same in a number of other sites local to me.

Thanks for the comments. Is there a good recent reference for the hortensis group?

Slug key

Hi Jamie

I've put together a new draft key to slugs, and happy to find people to test it. If you would like a copy, email me at brian.eversham@wildlifebcn.org, and I'll happily send a copy. I'll be revising it over Christmas (with a few new photos), so comments would be welcome.

Looking at these pics again, I can see why Christian Owen suggests Arion owenii - it looks rather pale and greyish, but browner on the mantle. I'd not noticed his comment.

Different populations of owenii vary - I know the Durham, Northumberland and northern Irish ones, but haven't seen it in Wales or south-west England yet.
