Many thanks! If it helps, they were at Blackwater in the New Forest. There was no information on the trees (should have taken some pictures of the mature trees) but I will have a look and see if there is some onlin information.

...Sarah, but of course I might be wrong!

I'm studying conifers this winter, as I'm quite weak on their ID, hence my close interest in their scale arrangement etc.

I very nearly added "were there any mature ones nearby"!

They always look as though they are going to be Yew, until the mini-branches with true leaves appear.
