I should have added that this is a Hornet mimic hover fly, the chestnut segments on the abdomen distinguish this species from V. inanis.

Many thanks. Our garden seems a good source of hornet mimics, a couple of years ago we had a hornet hawk moth buzzing around the kitchen until I caught it and put it back outside. Ken
