Gives us the English noun 'jinx', something which brings bad luck. Back in ancient Greece, when casting a spell upon someone, witches used to strap a Wryneck on to the spokes of a wheel, with its wings spread, and then spin the wheel. Not sure how it worked after that (!), but all down to the bird's weird head turning and cryptic appearance, no doubt.

reminds me of Pope's '..butterfly upon a wheel', a Neo-classical satirical allusion to an ancient form of torture..? I wonder if there's a symbolic link.. the strapping of someone to a wheel
