It may well be this species Gyroporus castanea as you say, I am not familar with it myself, but just realised one of the other characters is that it can develop cavities inside the stem so is a good idea to slice it lengthwise to look for these.
If I ever come across it again and there are several I will remember to do just that, thanks Miked ;-)
