I didn think chrysops had red front legs (or white stripes behind the eyes unlike most other Phileus spp).

Just out of interest, these were my references for the red front legs and white stripes:
The latter shows some photos of individuals without those characteristics, so probably the colouring is variable.
By the way, is it Phileus or Philaeus, or both?
Yes... sorry its "Philaeus" rather than "Phileus" I think (so I've added a revised ID).
I'm never convinced by referring to wikipedia (for anything) - so my spider guide tends to be this one (not let me down yet, at least for the majority of European spiders).
