Although there is no picture posted for this observation I would be interested to know how you are sure that this moth was a Grey Dagger. This species is notoriously difficult to distinguish from the Dark Dagger, Acronicta tridens, without resorting to 'gen det' (ie close examination of the genitalia).
The caterpillars of the two species are readily distinguishable from external characters though.
