Jay with acorn
Description:

A poor photo but neverless the unmistakeable Jay with acorn- perhaps ready to bury it for the oncoming winter.
Have lived here for 12 years, and this is the first year that I have seen (and indeed heard) a Jay in this vicinity. Is it likely to be one of this year's youngsters from further afield seeking a new territory or perhaps simply looking for food.

Jays

As you say, it could be a local bird foraging for food, or looking for a territory. However, there have been large numbers entering the country from the continent, where the acorn crop has apparently failed. Certainly, there are more around than usual, so it could be a foreigner!
