Description:

Girth 1.35m. Appear to be thinner roots growing on trunk which have been coppiced. Possible Sycamore tree.

Ivy

The "thinner roots growing on trunk which have been coppiced" are ivy stems. Someone has cut off the ivy at the base of the tree, leaving the rest of the ivy above to die.

[There are people who can identify trees by the bark, but there are lot more who can identify them by the leaves, so if you post photographs of the leaves you're more likely to get an identification.]

Sycamore

Sycamore would not have such grooved bark. I recommend Collins Tree Guide (Johnson and More).
