Late flowering umbellifer for ID

Observed: 15th September 2012 By: ahbahb’s reputation in Plantsahb’s reputation in Plantsahb’s reputation in Plants

This one has beaten me. Was surprised to see this in flower in mid-September and took photographs "to ID later" - a month on and ... nothing seems to fit all the features noted.

Cow Parsley

Thanks for the ID - I had ruled out Cow Parsley from my thinking on the basis of the date - but am wiser (and a little older) now!

Cow Parsley...

..has been seen elsewhere flowering this late in the year: we also found Hemlock (Conium maculatum) in full flower just a couple of weeks ago. It's been an odd year.

Your photos are superb, it's easy to see the shape of the fruits (very indicative of Cow Parsley) and the "fat" curvy bracteoles - again, very indicative.

I'm in two minds about the purple colouration on the stem: we've noticed a lot more purple on umbellifer stems than usual this year, could it possibly be a temperature thing? Our Hemlock specimen was so strongly blotched that the stems were nearly solid purple.
