The "strange curly petal" is the spathe, which is a type of bract, and the "mace type thing" is the spadix, which is an inflorescence formed on many small flowers on a fleshy stalk.

It's not a native aroid (Arum, Acorus), nor the occasionally naturalised Lysochiton. It could just possibly be Calla with an aberrant spathe, but considering the location it could well be an exotic not naturalised in the UK.

Thanks, great help, very interesting finding out about the different parts too. I found it in the humid and damp butterfly house so quite possibly from somewhere tropical
