Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

It is always handy if you can say what your fungus is growing on, or what other plants (esp trees) are in the area. Tremella mesenterica is often found on gorse.
Thanks, Littorella, for comments and advice, much appreciated. I have added a picture of the dead bush on which the fungus was found. I think it is indeed an old gorse, as it was certainly amongst other gorse bushes at the edge of an area of farm grassland.
