Description:

Found this beetle clinging to the top of one of the miniature conifers in the garden. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to which species it is as I find these kind of beetles very difficult to differentiate.

Thanks!

We have some wild strawberry plants in the garden quite close to that miniature conifer so it would make sense if it were a Strawberry Seed Beetle, I suppose!

I think this is Pterostichus

I think this is Pterostichus madidus - also, rather confusingly sometimes called just 'Strawberry Beetle'.

Harpalus is a slightly different shape, duller black, has paler legs (usually completely red) and sharp hind angles at the rear of the thorax. P. madidus comes in two colour forms - one with all black legs, and this one with the red 'thighs'.
