Things in a bucket!

Observed: 29th September 2012 By: jlh524

I left a bucket of weeds etc in the garden and after a period of rain it had filled with water...and had some things in it! There are little wriggley things which look similar to frogswan but are different, and they move around, or cluster around floating bits, and lower in the bucket there are long wormy things which ar reddish, and they seem to be suctioned to the sides. They're a bit harder to make out.

    Likely ID
    mosquito larvae
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

Mosquitoes and midges

The wiggly ones are mosquito larvae and probably pupae too. The reddish wormy ones could be midge (chironomid) larvae. I often leave buckets of weeds about the garden and get quite a few different fly species appearing, including hoverflies and soldierflies.
