Vespa crabo.jpg
Description:

Hornet feeding on sap from damaged birch. You can also see a brave/foolish ant attacking its leg! Hornets have an undeserved reputation as an aggressive species. I was able to get within a foot of this one with my macro lens and not once did it seem agitated with me. It's normally only if their nest is threatened that they will attack. As well as plant sap, they normally feed o an array of other invertebrates - I've seen one take a common wasp and devour it in under two minutes!
