spineless

Spineless hollies might be Ilex x altaclerensis.

Thank you

Thank you - the book from which I got the scientific name doesn't go into the detail of the fact there are different names for the different varieties, so I've learned something today!

Diversity

There are several hundred species of holly. Only Ilex aquifolium is native to Britain, but several others are occasionally grown.

There are also a great number of ornamental cultivars. Most of these are either cultivars of Ilex aquifolium, or of its hybrid with Ilex perado (Ilex x altaclerensis). Drawing the line between these two taxa is beyond me.
