I can't offer the sort of help you are looking for, but I thought I'd chip in anyway! I've only seen C. saxicola once, but have seen C. flavescens countless times. I could believe that this is C. flavescens if it was abraded so that the medulla was exposed, but nope - doesn't appear to be the case. It's far too densely pruinose for my (limited) understanding of that species. I'm sure you're right.
Thanks Nigel, your reassurance is much appreciated as I only came across C. saxicola once in Ireland and I'm much less confident of my ID abilities now I'm in new territory with calcareous rocks!
