Size

It was about 2cm in size. I'm not sure about the orange scales but it was a lot lighter underneath.

Size

2cm in size (if by that you mean wing length rather than wing span) is about right for Large Ranunculus so it could still be that.

The amount of orange scales vary quite a lot, if there were a lot they would be obvious and you would have noticed them, but if only a few they could have been overlooked.

Anyway from the photos here I cannot really go further with the ID that I have, but look up Large Ranunculus on ukmoths.org.uk and see what you think.
