It looks like the Small Coppers are challenging the Gatekeepers to be the most abundant butterfly species on the meadow this week.

Interesting observation, small coppers are not at all numerous in Dorset this year, whereas gatekeepers are extremely abundant. I often wonder why we don't see more small coppers down here, as their foodplant (sorrel) is everywhere. Perhaps they are being parasitised by a wasp (or fly as in the case of the small tortoiseshell), in which case their numbers will revive in a few years when the parasite's population drops.
