Large (12 cm across) leathery mushrooms with tough, flexible stems growing on an old stump buried in the grass. Strong mushroom smell, no spore print.

I don't think these are an Armillaria sp. I suspect either Pluteus or even Melanoleuca.
Thanks Mal. They were leathery and no spores dropped out, so I guess they were past their sell-by-date. They must have been hiding in the grass on the previous times I past that spot.
Having found a P cervinus this morning, I'm inclined to agree with your suggestion that this is also a Pluteus.
