It was once in Geotrupes before that genus was split. The pitting on the pronotum and the sculpture on the elytra make it this, as does the more compact shape. It seems to be out and about just now - I came on nearly a dozen yesterday near Aviemore.

I saw 4 of them on the forest floor on Sunday, found a jam jar full of water lying at an angle in the moss. There was approx 50 of these in it all dead. The stink of the decaying beetles must have drawn more and more but they couldnt get back up the sides of the jar and perished in it.
