What are the features that suggest a Metellina species?
Front legs much longer than back. (legs 3 shortest)
Spiney legs. Spotted femur, annulated tibia.
Distinctive abdomen pattern, but very variable in colour.
Distinctive overall shape to the abdomen - narrower in males, broader in gravid females, but always broadest and tallest nearer the front of the abdomen narrowing to the rear, its difficult to put into words but very distinctive once you've seen a lot.
Variable, but distinctive pattern on the carapace.
I'm assuming it is not possible to get to species level from these pictures.
Its a female, needs identification by close examination of the epigyne.
A male would have been possible if there was a close, sharp, shot of the palps and/or length of hairs on metatarsus 1.
From the date its more likely to be m.segmentata, but season is not a guarantee of the species. Hence metellina sp. *is* the best id (or perhaps, metellina segmentata sensu lato - i.e. in the broader sense - including m.mengei)
I don't really *do* spiders so don't bother retaining specimens so this one will have to remain at genus level.
