This is the only lookalike with a yellow-haired scutellum. Sometimes the hairs abrade, but this one is very clear.

Thanks for explaining this Syrphus, I googled some images of the species, some had a yellow scutellum, some seemed black. I was unsure why til now, thankfully mine had the yellow hairs intact and was more straightforward to ID after seeing an earlier ID by yourself.
It could be, of course, that some of the online images were wrongly named. That is not unheard of! It is always good to refer only to reliable sites. For beetles, http://www.thewcg.org.uk/ is excellent value.
I know what you mean, online images with ID's, titles attached are definitely to be treated with caution.
Thanks for the link, I will put it to use right now as I have a beetle I have seen many times but I cant find its image or scientific name.
