inanis occasionally has the black dividing mark on tergite 2 somewhat less distinct but it never has the reddish, hornety look that zonaria consistently displays, shockingly well.. I watched an enormous 'zonaria' 2 days ago drifting over a damp nettle area for half a minute before having to admit that the sickening drone it sounded wasn't a distant lawnmower and that it was a very large real hornet! That visual impression shouldn't occur with inanis, which is more like a fat wasp with a cleaner yellow-and-black look, and can be superficially confused with the larger yellow versions of Myathropa florea
