Forgot to add size (doh!): roughly 5"/12cm, and found dead in our suburban garden (it's in the bin now, & so can't be measured!). At least 1/2 a mile away from the closest rural field, I suspect it was accidentally dropped by one of the many Red Kites in our area. I thought maybe it was a mole because of the dark colour of the coat, but are the paws/claws big enough for them? (and the digging they need them for?).

Looks like somebody's pet hamster to me, although the tail could have been longer originally and bitten off.
