Dragonfly, Ruddy Darters, ovipositing behaviour on grass, Grafham Water, 2012-09-13 007
Description:

I'm a bit puzzled by the behaviour of these darters. They were about 75 metres from any water, and dabbing as though ovipositing on grass.
The habitat included nearby bushes and trees, as well as grass.

Ovipositing.

Ruddy Darters will sometimes oviposit over areas which are dry, but which tend to flood during the winter.

Thanks, Roy

That's interesting. I've never seen the water reach the area these ones were working their way over, at least not in the last couple of years, even in the winter. But the grass was pretty damp, so perhaps they were deceived by that.
