These were seen at the base of an oak tree near my local river, accompanied by a host of red admirals feeding from a white substance deposited by the hornets on the tree.

It sounds as if the butterflies were feeding on sap leaking from the tree - maybe the hornets were, too. Why did you think they white matter was deposited by hornets?

I could see them depositing

I could see them depositing this substance. When going there this weekend the butterflies were not there but there were more hornets.
