Dead wood is not...

... necessarily petrified. The word 'petrified' literally means 'turned to stone', and is often used to describe fossilised wood.

This is an area of Porlcok

This is an area of Porlcok Marsh that was flooded about 10 years ago when the shingle ridge was breached by the sea. The trees died because of the salt water. If you go onto the beach there is in fact a "sumerged" forest - this was trees that lived on land - there then was a rise in sea level and the trees have been preserved in peat.
