Description:

small nest. very fine weaving. found on the ground near trees and hedges in large garden. Would like to know what bird built it as the cup is very small.

? Goldcrest

It looks rather like a Goldcrest nest, but I'm not sure what else may have a similar nest. Oddly the Wikipedia entry suggests the Goldcrest nest has an internal diameter of around 3.5 inches, which is the diameter of the whole nest here - I assume that is a mistake in Wikipedia...

I think you may be right, as the cup is lined with feathers. What a substantial construction for such a tiny bird!

Sorry ignore my first identification, I got muddled up with some pictures on the internet. But I do think that nest has been made by a finch, and most likely a Goldfinch.
