Still find it strange to see Mallards "grazing" on ploughed fields!

I bet the field has just been sown with some nice tasty seeds!
Although they will eat greenery, mallard do not graze, as such.
The males will be following the hens, the hens will be eating either fresh seedlings, insects or seed, as Bob suggests.
At a different time of year they could also be gleaning tiny potatoes, carrots or slivers of beet.
