Could anyone suggest what might have made these holes (about 6cm in diameter) high up in the trunk of an ancient beech tree? Thanks.

I don't know much about different woodpeckers though. We saw some holes like this at Wicken Fen nature reserve - but they had been made in the wooden walls of the bird hides!
